Dear Mr. Grier:
RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN DATED SEPTEMBER 12, 1979 (79-23)
POTENTIAL FAILURE OF EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR FIELD EXCITER TRANSFORMERS SALEM GENERATING STATION This letter is in response to your letter dated September 12, 1979, which concerns the potential failure of emergency diesel generators, namely the field exciter transformer.
The Salem Generating Station Units 1 and 2 diesel generator trans-former connections have been reviewed in accordance with IE Bulletin 79-23.
The connections between low KVA rated potential transformers and high KVA rated diesel generator potential transformers are such that circulating currents are adequately limited.
Therefore, no corrective action is required.
Salem Generating Station Units 1 and 2 Diesel Generators, Nos. 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, and 2C were tested in accordance with requirements of Bulletin 79-23, which includes a 24-hour run, 22 hours2.546296e-4 days
0.00611 hours
3.637566e-5 weeks
8.371e-6 months
at a load equivalent to the continuous rating (2600 KW) of the diesel generator and 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
at a load equivalent to the 2-hour rating (2760 KW) of the diesel generator.
This test was done under Salem Generating Sta-tion surveillance procedures.
No alarms or abnormal conditions were recorded during this test, therefore, PSE&G concludes that all systems
