..Q PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--
PNS-79-67 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

INVENTORY DIFFERENCE GAIN IN EXCESS OF CALCULATED LIMIT OF ERROR As a result of an inventory of highly enriched uranium conducted May 18, 1979, the licensee reported an inventory difference (ID) gain in excess of the calcu-lated limit of error (LEID).
As a result of a recent inspection by Region I (Philadelphia) and continuing investigation by the licensee, errors in the May 18 inventory have been detected which increase the magnitude of the reported ID gain.
Current causes appear to be the result of errors in the facility records.
The Region has scheduled additional inspections at the Montville facility to review the results of the licensee's investigation.
Media interest is not expected.
Neither the licensee nor the Region plan to issue a press release.
The State of Connecticut has been informed.
NRC, Region I, (Fhiladelphia) received notification of this occurrence as a result of continuing discussions with the licensee on June 27.
