SUBJECT:

IliF0PETION REPORT ON SEISMOLOGY / GEOLOGY REVIEW 0F THE GENERAL ELECTRIC TEST REACTOR (GETR)

On October 24, 1977, the NRC staff ordered General Electric to shut down the GETR due to evidence of faulting at the site. After extensive inves-tication by General. Electric and review of the results of this investigation by the NRC.taff and its consultants, the staff issued, by letter dated September 27, 1979, its evaluation of the seismology and geology of the GETR site. A copy of this evaluation is enclosed for your Information.

The staff hcs concluded that a surface offset of two and a half meters could occur beneath the GETR and therefore should be a design basis.

Because this is greater than the one meter offset proposed by General Electric, as a design basis, the staff does not intend to continue its review of the GETR as currently dsi.gned and analyzed by General Electric.

This position is presented in.the enclosed letter which transmitted the staff's evaluation to Ceneral Electric and other participants in the proceeding.
