Dear Dr. Scaborg:
At its ninety-sixth meeting, on April 4-6,'1963, the. Advisory Couittco on Reactor Safeguards completed its re-c:: amination of the application by Metropolitan Edison Cc=pany to construct the Three Milo Isinnd Nuclear Station Unit 1.
The Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit I was the cubject of a report to you dated January 17, 1968.
The revicu van re-opened at the ninety-fifth ACas meeting, on March 7-9, 1958, in consideration of an additional sub-lttal by the cpplicant cyclucting further the offects of the pro::imity of the Olcated State Airport.
The Committco has had the benefit of discussions uith repre-sentatives of Metropolitan Edicon Company, Ecbcock and Wilcox Company, Gilbert Associates, and the AEC Regulatory Staff and their consultants. The additional documents cubmitted cro listed in thic report.
Although the probability of an airplano hitting the station is very small, the applicant has undertaken to provide principal ctructures and components of the ctation uith the capability of uithstanding aircraft striko loadings over n'rance of condi-tions, including effects such as cocondary missiles, fire, and pressure end temperature effcets. The reactor building, control building, fuel handling building, auxiliary buildt.n3, cnd inter =c-dicte building vill have the necessary =odificatirns to escure the capability of bringing the plcnt to a cafe sh tdoun condition.
