UNEVEN IRAWDOW OF BEST AND CHDGCAL ADDITIVE TANKS -

THREE MILE ISIAND, UNIT 1 Plant Name: Three Mile Island, Unit 1 Docket No.: 50-289 Responsible Branch: ORB #4 Project % ncer:

G. B. Zwetzig Reviewing Branch: Plant Systems Branch Review Status: Awaiting Information In response to your Technical Assistance Request (ORB 4-73), tb Plant Systems Branch has reviewed the information submitted by the licensee in its letters, dated October 13, 1975, November 12, 1975, and February 21, 1976, concerning the problem of eneven drawdown of the Borated Water Storage Tank (BWST) and the associated chemical additive tanks.

The licensee states that the sodium thiosulfate tank and the sodium hydroxide tank will empty in about sixteen and ten minutes respectively, under full flow conditions, before the recirculation phase begins. The concern is the possibility for air entering the contmhant spray lines from the chemical additive tanks and causing cavitation of the contain-We find that additional infors::ation, as described in ment spray pumps.

the enclosure, is required in order to contimia our review.

50-239 1.

The respense to Ite: 4.c of our letter, dated January 20, 1976 is inec=plete.

Please provide an analysis to de=cnstrate that adverse vortex formation will not occur in the EWST.

2.

Discuss the possibility for cavitation of the Reacter Building Spray (RSS) pu=ps due to air entering the pu=ps frc= the sodium hydroxide tank and sodium thiosulfate tank as a result of uneven drawdown of the chemical additive tanks and the SWST or describe those measures for preventing RBS pu=p cavitation. Provide an analysis to show the a cunt of air drawn in through the empty tanks.
