DEC 2 9 B76 SAFETY EVALUATION OPERATIONS WITH HIGH REACTOR BUILDING INT M*AL TEMPERATURES TEREE MILE ISLAND, UNIT 1 DOCKET No.-
50-189 INTRODUCTION In accordance with Section 6.7.2.b.2 of the Three Mile Island, Unit 1 Technical Specifications the licensee submitted a Nonroutine 30-day Report (75-08), dated October 24, 1975, concerning operations with the Reactor Building temperatures being in excess of 110*F.
During the summer months, containment temperatures in excess of the 110*F sustained temperature assumed in the FSAR have been experienced. Average temperatures approaching 130*F have been experienced above elevation 320 feet and 110*F-120*F below elevation 320 feet on days when the wet bulb temperatures have been greater than approximately 75'F.
We have reviewed and evaluated the information presented 'in the licensee's -report. Our evaluation of the above cited issues is presented below.
EVALUATION In the course of our review, we performed a sensitivity study to determine the effect that the increased containment operating tempera-ture would have on the post-LOCA containment conditions.
Four containment Ia each case, pressure and temperature response analyses were performed.
a new initial temperature was assumed to exist throughout cne containment.

"'"*3e ASP
~S DEC 2 9 B76 The initial temperatures utilized were: 90'F (Case 1), 130'F (Case 2),
150*F (Case 3), and 170'F (Case 4).
The results of these analyses are presented in Figure 1 and Figure 2.
These figures indicate that none of the calculated peak accident pressures exceed the containment design pressure of 55 psig. The calculated peak accident temperature does not exceed the design temperature of 281*F, for those cases where the initial temperature in the containment is below 150*F.
CONCLUSION The sensitivity study has demonstra ed that the magnitude of changes in the calculated peak pressure and temperature due to the differences in the operating temperatures experienced in TMI containment is 'nsignifica.2t, and that resultant pressure and temperature in containment. auld not exceed the design values.
