PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION March 30, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-70 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation _
and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
PLANNED ACTION BY THE MAYOR OF WEST CHICAG0, ILLIN0IS During an ABC television program on March 29, 1979, the Kerr-McGee West Chicago facility was identified as a location containing toxic cher;.icals which are hazardous to the local populace.
As a result of this program, the Mayor has been deluged with telephone calls.
The Mayor informed Region III that he intends to call a news conference this weekend to announce his intention to demand the Illinois Attorney General's Office to sue Kerr-McGee and the NRC.
The suit will demand that the materials be removed from the West Chicago area within 60 days.
For background information, Kerr-McGee submitted a decommissioning plan for the facility.
It is in the process of being reviewed by NMSS, IE, the City of West Chicago, the State of Illinois, and the Illinois Attorney General's Office.
The State of Illinois is being notified by RIII.
URC, Region III (Chicago), received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Mayor of West Chicago at 9:30 a.m., March 30, 1979.
