PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July, 2, 1979 PRELIMIhARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PH0-79-205 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
LOW WATER LEVEL TRIP A plant trip occurred at 11:20 a.m. on July 2, 1979.
The trip was caused by a loss of instrument air for Unit I, which caused the feedwater regulating valves to drift. shut resulting in a reactor low water level scram.
The water level transient was mild and was immediately restored following the scram.
The licensee plans to perform maintenance which will delay restart until July 4, 1979.
Media interest is expected.
The State of Connecticut has been informed.
A press release is planned by the licensee and NRC will respond to inquiries.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Resident Inspector at 11:45 a.m., July 2, 1979.
