June 4, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-164 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of FOS $1BLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
WORKER OVERCOME FROM ARG0N GAS IN A TANK The NRC Resident Inspector at the Midland fluclear plant site was infonned at 12:30 p.m., June 14, 1979, that a Babcock and Wilcox employee is dead and two others are in stable condition in a local hospital, all from being overcome after entering a tank filled with argon purge gas.
Nine other site workers were treated and released by the hospital.
The Unit 2 incore instrumentation tank was entered to inspect the internals.
The tank was found to be full of argon placed in the tank as a purge gas for some drain line welding that had been done on the outside of the tank.
The dead employee entered first (from the top), became overcome and fell, sustaining other injuries.
The others entered the tank in an attempt to rescue the first man.
The State of flichigan has been notified and the licensee plans to issue a press release.
The State of Michigan OSHA representatives have been notified.
