This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of_
_POSSIBLE safety cr public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility:
Privately owned Landfill Norton, Massachusetts
Subject:
RADI0 ACTIVE ftATERIAL IN PRIVATE SECTOR Region I (Philadelphia) was informed at 11:00 a.m., that TV station reporters arrived at the landfill area while NRC Region I inspectors, a town of Norton representative, USGS representatives, and a flassachusetts representative were examining the area.
The NRC inspectors and accompanying personnei were evaluating plans for core drill sampling in the landfill at the time of news media arrival.
Three preliminary hand augered core samples were obtained by USGS personnel.
The inspectors are being interviewed by the TV station.
Media interest is expected because of past media coverage of the previous NRC activities at the landfill.
The Commonwealth of Ma sachusetts has been informed. A press release is not planned by NRC.
MRC, Region I, received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a Region I inspector at the landfill.
