PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 5, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-217 This preliminary notification
- nstitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest signiricance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
HIGH VIBRATION IN TURBINE GENERATOR Region III was notified at 9:30 a.m. on July 5, 1979 that Prairie Island Unit I shut down from 100% power at 7:00 a.m. on July 4, 1979 due to high vibration in the turbine generator.
Investigation into the cause of the vibration is being performed by the licensee and may result in an outage of more than 5 days.
Unit I recently completed a refuel'ng and had completed its steam generator nozzle inspection and found no indications of cracking.
The utility plans to announce the shutdown in their periodic public report on the operating status of the Northern States Power Company.
Region III plans no press release.
The State of Minnesota is being notified.
