PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION June 25, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-192 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE eh safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

UNIT SHUT DOWN TO MODIFY AUXILIARY FEEDWATER SYSTEM The reactor was shut down June 24 to implement an auxiliary feedwater system modification, pursuant to the licensee's commitments stated in the Commission's Order dated May 7, 1979. The outage is expected to last twelve days.

The modification will provide Unit I with two electric driven auxiliary feedwater pumps as backup to the steam-driven auxiliary feedwater pump.

A similar installation is being implemented on Oconee Unit No. 3 during the current refueling outage.

The Unit No. 2 installation is scheduled for a future outage.

Media interest is not anticipated. A news release is not planned by the licensee or the NRC.

The State of South Carolina has been informed.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone irom Resident Inspector at 11:00 a.m. on June 25.
