PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 10, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-227 h/
This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE
[
safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY:
Mississippi Power and Light Company Grand Gulf Docket No. 50-416 Port Gibson, Mississippi
SUBJECT:
FIRE IN UNIT 1 CONTAINMENT BUILDING A fire occurred near the Unit 1 installed reactor vessel at 9:30 a.m.
on July 9.
The fire was caused by acetylene leakage from a welder's hose coming into contact with a grinding motor.
Two men using the grinder were burned about the arms but returned to work the same day.
Flames spread into the nearby clean room which is used for preparation for entry into the reactor vessel.
A stack of white coveralls caught fire and was extinguished by dry powder extinguishers and water within five minutes. Damage was minimal.
The plant is under construction and there is no nuclear fuel on-site, An IE inspector is on-site and will review the licen-see's action.
News media interest has not been experienced and is not anticipated.
News releases are not planned by the licensee or NRC.
The State of Mississippi and OSHA have been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 4:05 p.m. on July 9, 1979.
