I fy PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 12, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF IVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-239 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Portland General Electric Company Trojan Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-344 Rainier, Oregon

Subject:

Oregon Legislature Passes Bill Authorizing Full Time State Inspector at Trojan Nuclear Plant Both houses of the Oregon Legislature have passed a bill which authorizes the Oregon Department of Energy (DOE) to assign a full time engineer / inspector at the Trojan nuclear plant. The bill is currently before the Governor for signing.

It is expected, if the bill is approved by the Governor, that an individual will be assigned by the DOE within approximately 6 months.

The DOE plans to have the individual work during night shift and weekend hours not normally covered by the NRC's resident inspector.

News media interest in this action by the Legislature is expected.

Region V (San Francisco) was initially notified of this information by the assigned resident inspector at approximately 9:00 a.m. on July 12, 1979.

The informati)n was subsequently confirmed by a DOE supervisor by telephone at approximately 9:30 a.m. on July 12, 1979.
