Facility: Rochester Gas and Electric Company R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, Unit No. 1 Ontario, New York Docket No. 50-244
Subject:
CRACKS IN STEAM GENERATOR FEED WATER PIPING Ultrasonic and radiographic examination of both ("A" ana "B") steam generator feedwater nozzle-to-pipe welds have revealed cracking in the base material of the 90 degree elbow which attaches to the feedwater nozzle.
The crack indications are estimated to be 1/32 - 1/16 inch in depth origir.ating from the inside surface of the elbow.
The extent of crack indications on the "A" steam generator elbow are approximately 300 degrees around the inside circumference while the "B" steam generator elbow is exhibiting crack indications around the entire (360 degrees) inside circumference.
The licensee is in the process of continuing to examine the remainder of the feedwater piping welds inside the reactor containment.
Examinations and repair work are expected to keep the plant out-of-service for at least three weeks.
The licensee shutdown the plant on July 6, 1979, specifically to perform the examinations of feedwater piping as required by NRC Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin No. 79-13, entitled, " Cracks in Feedwater System Piping."
This PN is issued for information only.
The NRC Region I Office will follow-up on additional developments and the repair work during the course of routine inspections at the facility.
Media interest is possible because of public attention to nuclear power plant issues.
The State of New York has been informed.
A press release will be issued by the licensee.
NRC does not plan to make a press release.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Acting Plant Superintendent at 4:35 p.m. on July 10, 1979.
