FACILITY:

WOLF CREEX, UNIT NO. 1 (SNUPPS)

KANSAS GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANY DN STN 50482

SUBJECT:

CONTAMINATION OF SAFETY RELATED STAINLESS STEEL PIPING The licensee informed RIV of a construction deficiency in which safety related stainless steel piping had been widely splattered with fire proofing material which contained a chloride contaminant.

The fire proofing material, "Duraspray,"

is a magnesium oxychloride and is sprayed on bare carbon steel structural members as a fire proofing coating.

During the spraying application, the material splattered onto uninstalled safety related stainless steel piping.

Duraspray, actively corrodes, upon contact, bare stainless steel, copper and aluminum.

The A/E (Bechtel) is evaluating the effect of the material on the piping and is formulating a procedure for removal of the material.

The licensee reported this matter to the RIV Project Inspector during an on site inspection on July 11, 1979, in accordance with the requirements of 10 CFR Part 50.55(e).

This information is current as of 2:00 p.m. on July 12, 1979.

The licensee does not plan to issue a news release.

However, public interest has been indicated previously in regard to other construction problems at the site.
