The information oresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all tna; is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility:

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1 (Occket No. 50017}

Subject:

INADVERTENT DISCHARGE OF ACID AND CAUSTIC SCLUTIONS TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY At 10:55 a.m. on July 13, 1979, the licensee reported to NRC, Region I an inadvertent release of acid and caustic solution to the Chesapeake Bay.

The licensee stated that at 10:00 a.m. on July 12, 1979, during the neutralization of the Calvert Cliffs Unit 1 condensate demineralizers, approximately 100 gallons of acid and 160 gallons of caustic solutions were discharged to the Chesapeake Bay.

This inadvertent release occurred as a result of a valve failure in the demineralizer system.

The chemicals were discharged through the yard oil interceptor, to discharge point 002.

At the time of the release a sample from the oil interceptor showed a pH of 9.8.

The acid and caustic solutions were diluted by the 002 ficw (1:100 dilution) prior to discharge into the Bay.

No radioactive material or oil were released during this event.

This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only.

Independent evaluation by an onsite NRC inspector is in progress.

Media interest is possible because of public sensitivity to releases from nuclear power plants.

The State of Maryland has been informed.

A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by tele-phone from the licensee at 10:55 on July 13, 1979.
