Subject:

TRI-STAE TPJTTIR CARRYING LSA IN CONNECTICUT The Connecticut State Fire Marshall's Office and Connecticut State EPA were checking vehicles carrying radioactive material.

A tractor pulling a Tri-State trailer carrying LSA material fron the UNC Wood River Junction, Rhode Island site to Barnwell, South Carolina, for burial was stopped on July 17, 1979.

The tractor did not have license plates, and the temporary Illinois registration of the tractor had expired.

The tractor-trailer unit was impounded at State Police Barrack E, Montville, Connecticut, until proper registration was obtained for the tractor.

The tractor-trailer was released and followed a route supplied by the State of Connecticut avoiding Hartford traffic, and it left Connecticut at

. _. _f-about 6:00 p.m.

The anit did have a permit from Connecticut DOT to carry the radioactive caterial on Connecticut highways.

The Norwich Bulletin carried a story concerning the happening on July 18, 1979.

The State of Connecticut initiated the subject action and is aware of the situation.

No press release is planned by the NRC.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by a telephone call fron an NRC inspector at 11:30 a.m.

on July 18, 1979.
