Facility: Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 2 Lusby, Maryland (Docket No. 50-318)

Subject:

CELORIDE INTRUSION OF SECONDARY WATER SYSTEM At 10:00 p.m. on July 27,1979, Unit 2 was shut down for planned repair of a steam leak on the feedwater check valve inside containment.

After repairs were effected a ret. urn to service commenced on the 4-12 p.m. shift on July 28.

During startup preporations, the strip recorder chart for sodium (Na) concentration indicated a stead 7 increase to approximately 60 PPM (indicative of increasing chloride (Cl) concentration in the secondary water).

A failed tube in the main condenser which resulted in sea water in-leakage was discovered as the cause of the increase of the sodium concentration.

The plant was placed in cold shutdown.

The failed tube was plugged, the steam generat. ors were drait.ed and the remainder of the secondary system is currently being bled and fed to re 'uce the chloride concentration to acceptable limits for return to service, tente.ively scheduled for August 2.

This PN is issued for information only.

Followup will be performed during routine inspection program.

Media interest is not expected.
