)t Olt W PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 23, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-274 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or oublic interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

LOCATION:

Charleston, West Virginia

SUBJECT:

TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT INVOLVING MEDICAL ISOTOPES A hospital licensee notified Region II that a Purolator truck, a company that picks up and delivers medical isotopes, collided with an oncoming vehicle, injuring both drivers and-possibly releasing contamination.

A Civil Defense truck driver, who responde~d to the incident, apparently exhibited some minor contamination on his trousers when surveyed at a local hospital.

None of the packages containing Ga-67 and Mo-99/Tc-99m exhibited surface contamination when measured at the Charleston Area Medical Center.

It appears that the contamination observed on the trousers of the Civil Defense driver was either in error or unrelated to the transportation incident.

A Xe-133 package on the manifest has not yet been located.

The extent of injuries is not known at this time.

A West Virginia official is participating in the surveys at the Charleston Arca Medical Center and the West Virginia Civil Defense and State police also responded to the scene of the accident.

Action by Region II depends on developments.

Neither the State of West Virginia nor Region II is planning a press release at this time.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from Charleston Area Medical Center at 10:05 a.m. on 7/23.

This information is current as of 12:00 noon on 7/23.
