EM PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION July 27, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-287 This preliminary notification constitutes EAP.LY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or oublic interest sionificance.

RADIOGRAPHY OVEREXPOSURE The licensee reported an apparent sixteen rems (calculated,' whole-body overexposure to a radiographer.
The pigtail disengaged on the 80 curie iridium-192 source leaving it in the exposed position.
Not knowing the source was exposed, the radiographer entered the high radiation area for about two minutes without making a radiation survey.
The incident occurred at 7:00 p.m. on July 26, 1979.
The source has been returned to its shielaed position in the deviu with no additional exposure to the handler.
The licensee secured operations for the remainder of the day and the exposed individual has been restricted from any additional work with radioactivity.
The film badge was processed early eq July 27, 1979 and showed a dose of 1.68 rems.
Region III will investigate this incident today, July 27, 1979.
The licensee does not plan to issue a press release.
NRC, Region III, Chicago, is considering a press release covering the incident.
The State of Missouri Health Department has been informed.
NRC, Region III, Chicago, was informed of this incident at about 9:15 p.m. on July 25, 1979.
