i i. \\e i, s July 30, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-290 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBII safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

United Nuclear Corporation Naval Products Division Montville, Connecticut Docket No.70-371 Subj ect:

FIRE IN AN IN-PLANT ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION The plant experienced a fir'e in an in-plant electrical substation which supplied electrical power to the East Building at 12:50 p.m., on July 28, 1979.

The fire was located in an area of the facility where no radioactive naterial is handled.

The plant was on annual maintenance shutdown.

No radio-active naterial was involved.

The substation had been shut down for annual maintenance of the system and a short circuit occurred when startup of the substation was attempted.

The facility emergency generator was running b-fore, during and a' ar the fire and no plant systems important to safety or safeguards were affected.

The fire was extinguished by the plant fire brigade.

This PN is issued for information only.

No additional action by Region I is anticipated.

.Se dia interest is possible because of local sensitivity to nuclear facility problems.

The State of Connecticut has been informed.

A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.

KRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) recieved notification of this occurrence by telephone call from the licensee at 1:05 p.m. on July 28, 1979.
