PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION Qda August 10, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-326 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notic6 of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sionificance.
The information presented is as initially received without verificatien or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY:
General Electric Company Nuclear Fuel Plant License No. SNM-1097 Wilmington, North Carolina
SUBJECT:
PLANT TRASH USED IN LANDFILL The licensee reported that on August 7,1979, their trash disposal contractor delivered four dumpster loads of unrestricted plant trash as landfill to a residential lot in an adjacent county.
A plant employee living near the fill area noticed white coveralls in the dumped' material.
One pair of coveralls had 800 counts per minute per 100 square centimeters on the unee area.
This is less than the NRC and licensee unrestricted release limit.
No other contamination was found.
The licensee will recover the material for resurvey and disposal at an authorized site, even though there is no safety significance involved.
A local radio station reporter interviewed a licensee representative and further media interest is expected.
The matter has been reported to the State of North Carolina by the licensee.
A news release by NRC is not planned.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 2:40 p.m. on August 9,1979.
