PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION' August S, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-325 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events 'of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sianificance.

New York Subiect:

PACKAGES CONTAINING RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL STOLEN FROM DELIVERY TRUCK At approximately 3-5 a.m. on August 9, four packages containing radio-pharmaceuticals were stolen from a delivery truck in New York City.

The theft involved a total of four packages.

Two packages were shipped by Mallinckrodt and two were shipped by Medi-Physics.

One of the Mallinckrodt packages contained ten 100 microcurie iodine-131 capsules for delivery to Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City and the other package contained 100 microcuries of iron-59 for delivery to Memorial Hospital in New York City.

No information is available at this time about the contents of the two Medi-Physic., packages.

Medical Delivery Services, Inc. contacted Mallinckrodt to report the Icst packages and was advised by Mallinckrodt to report the incident to the New York City Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control.

NRC Region III notified Region I who will pursue the matter with New York Ci ty Of ficials.

There has been no known media interest to date.
