. August 9,1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-324 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sionificance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all tnat is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
UNSCHEDULED SHUTDOWN An increase in leakage into the drywell was noted on August 9, 1979.
By 7:30 a.m. the leak rate was approximately 4 gpm.
A drywell entry was made at approximately 10:00 a.m. at.which time wet piping insulation was noted in the general area of the "A" recirculation loop discharge valve.
The licensee com-menced a plant shutdown at 12:00 noon to investigate and repair the source of this leakage (The Technical Specifications require a plant shutdown to cold shutdown conditions within 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> if leakage into the drywell from unidentified sources exceeds 5 gpm).
Cold shutdown is expected by 1:00 a.m. on August 10, 1979.
Media interest is expected because of sensitivity to nuclear plant issues.
The State of Vermont has been informed.
A press release is planned by the licensee.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the plant superintendent at 11:22 a.m. on August 9,1979.
