PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 9, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-323 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on th's date.

LIMITED DECONTAMINATION WORK The Kerr-McGee Corporation has requested the NRC Region III (Chicago) office to allow them to per' form limited decontamination of its factory in West Chicago pending the. approval by the NRC of its revised site decommissioning plan which is in preparation but has not yet been submitted to the NRC for review.
The licensee submitted a decontamination plan on August 1, 1979, and has hired an experienced licensed contractor to perform the decontamination work.
Region III is currently reviewing the plan with the licensee and repre-sentatives of NRC Headquarters for adequacy.
If the reviews result in an adequate plan, Region III intends to authorize this work to begin.
State of Illinois and City of West Chicago officials have been informed of Kerr-McGee's request and RIII's tentative plan.
There will be no on-site disposal of radioactive material.
Waste resulting from the decontam-ination operation will be packaged and shipped to a commercial licensed burial site.
Waste materials which meet NRC's guidelines for acceptable surface contamination will be taken to a local landfill.
.There has been media interest in this work.
The Mayor of the City of West Chicago wants the factory cleaned up and removed.
Kerr-McGee officials have made public statements and have held meetings describing tne work to be perfr led.
Several newspaper articles have been written recently concerning the start of decontamination work.
Region III intencs to issue a press release local y when the decontamination plan it approved.
