o PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 8, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-321 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sionificance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

RADI0 ACTIVE CONTAMINATION AT RESEARCH REACTOR FACILITY During routine use the research reactor " rabbit" system became slightly contaminated.

The " rabbit" system is a pneumatically operated closed system used to transfer samples into and out of the reactor.

The contamination was low level but interfered with the analysis of samples.

Decontamination of the

" rabbit" system was performed on July 31 and August 1,1979 and the system was returned to use on August 1, 1979.

On August 7, 1979 the licensae stated that a television news crew visited the reactor and made films.

A news release by the NRC Region V Office is not planned.

Region V (San Francisco) was informed of the event by telephone at 10:00 a.m.

on August 8, 1979.
