The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluatic and is basically all tna is known by IE staff on this date.

LIQUIDDRIPPINUFROMTRUCKCARRYINGSOLIDWASTEFROMTHE FERMI LABORATORY At 5: 00 p.m., August 7,1979, employees of the Tri-State Trucking Company observed licaid dripping from the ba'ck of a truck carrying solid radioactive waste from the De::ar ment of Energy's Fermi Laboratory.

The truck, believed to be heading to the Earwell, South Carolina, b6 rial site, had stopped aoodt 3:00 p.m. at the terminal in Seneca, Illinois.

The shipment consisted of waste in nine wooden crates, each a:Orcximately 6 ft. x 6 ft. x 4 ft.

The principal isotope was manganese-54.

Two of :ne nine crates appeared to be leaking.

Tne terminal manager informed the corporate manager in Joplin, Missouri, of the in:' cent.

The corporate manager called the Illinois Division of Radiological

.hea'tn who in turn called the NRC Duty Officer.

Tne Department of Energy was informed of the incident at 10:30 p.m. on August 7, 1373 The truck has been isolated and roped off at the Seneca terminal.

Two re: esentatives from the Fermi Laboratory will be going to the terminal this morn-inc. August 8,1979, to check the shipment.

A; :ne present time, the material appears to be DOE material and not under the jur-isc'ction of the NRC.

The DOE will inform the NRC of the results of its survey of
