PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 7, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNC-79-310 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification o. evaluation and is basically all tnat is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY:
Tennessee Valley Authority Sequoyah, Unit No. 1 Docket No. 50-327 Chattanooga, Tennessee SUEJECT:
PERSONNEL INJURY At approximately 8:00 p.m. on August 6 an operator fell 30 feet to the reactor cavity floor and received two broken ankles, possible fracture of one leg and ve rteb ra.
He was taken to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The incividual was assisting in conducting a preoperational test and fell while proceeding down into the reactor cavity to check water level in the reactor vessel.
A TVA Accident Investigation team is on site.
Unit No. 1 is 99%
complete and preoperational testing is in progress.
Radioactive materials were not involved in this occurrence.
Media interest is anticipated.
The licensee is issuing a news release; the NRC coes not plan a news release.
The State of Tennessee and OSHA have been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephona from Resident Inspector at 9:10 a.m. on August 7.
