Subject:
SPILL OF LICENSED BYPRODUCT MATERIAL IN AN UNRESTRICTED AREA The licensee reported a spill of licensed byproduct material on a parking area ranp in an unrestricted area.
The incident, involving approximately one millicurie of phosphorus-32, occurred on July 31, 1979, at about 12:30 p.m.
Radiation levels over the 10-12 square foot area, af ter decontamination efforts are:
surface, 2 milliroentgen per hour general and one spot of 8 milliroentgen per hour maximum; and at gonadal height 0.5 milliroentgen per hour. The area was cordoned off during the decon-ta=ination.
There was negligible exposure to individuals as a result of the spill or decontacination effort.
No contamination was detected on automobiles.or personnel.
The licensee explained that, although the con-taminated area is in an unrestricted area, it is somewhat inaccessible to the general public.
Region III plans to perform a special inspection of this incident.
Neither the licensee nor the NRC plans a press release.
The EPA and the State of Illinois have been informed.

August 1, 1979.
