DISCHARGE OF CHLORINE FROM OVERFL0h' 0F S0DIUM HYP0CLORITE TANK TO GROUND NEAR UNIT 2/3 CRIB HOUSE On July 31, 1979, a discharge of less than 500 gallons of sodium hypochlorite occurred as a result of overflow of the tank located in the Unit 2/3 crib-house.

The 10% solution discharged in puddles to the ground surrounding the cribhouse.

The overflow resulted from back flushing of the service water line because of an open valve or a stuck check valve.

The licensee plans to wash the puddles to the Unit 2/3 condenser intake where the solution will be further diluted in the cooling lake.

Samples of chlorine residuals will be taken.

The licensee declared a Generating Stations Emergency Plan alert.

This discharge did not involve an of fsite release and no radiation releases were involved in this occurrence.

Unit 2 was shutdown and Unit 3 was in operation at the time of this occurrence.

The EPA and State of Illinois have been informed.

Tne licensee and Region III do not plan to issue a press release but will respond to inquiries.

NRC, Region III (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Nuclear Division Manager on duty at 7:40 a.m on July 31, 1979.
