Subject:

RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR The NRC Region I office was informed at 12:30 a.m. on July 29, 1979 by a private citizen that he had removed 3 containers marked with Caution Radioactive Material labels from a former Carter's Ink Corporation (nonlicensee) building located along the Charles River in Cambridge, Mass, and took them to his home.

There may be core containers present in the building.

The containers, one of which had a broken seal, apparently contain 1 uCi of Ni-63, a long-lived beta emitter.

The Common-wealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Director of Radiation Control Programs, was contacted at 8:00 a.m. on July 29, 1979 and requested to

'nvestigate this incident; Region I will also initiate an inquiry into the case ot July 30, 1979.

Medu interest is expected because of public sensitivity to nuclear related items in the Boston area.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been informed.

A press release is not currently planned by the NRC.

NRC, Region I ( Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a private citizen at 12:30 a.m. on' July 29, 1979.
