PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT GR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PI'0-79-26 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sianificance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

REPORT OF AN EXPOSURE TO A NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNICIAN A technician, who has been working in the Nuclear Medicine Department of Carle Clinic for several weeks, had a TLD whole body badge exposure of 22.6 rems and a wrist badge exposure of 10.1 rems fer the period December 17, 1978 through January 15, 1979.

The technician routinely alutes a 1.5 curie molybdenum 99 technetium 90m generator.

The exposure was reported to the licensee by R. S. Landauer, Jr., via telephone on February 9,1979, at 4:30 p.m.

A telegram confirmation was received by the licensee on February 12, 1979.

Neither the licensee nor Region III plans a press release; however, Region III will respond to media or public questions on this matter.

The Illinois State Health Department has been notified of this event.

NRC, Region III (Chicago), received notification of this occurrence by telephone from a licensee Nuclear Medicine Department representative at 11:50 a.m. on February 12, 1979.

Region III will investigate this matter to determine if the badge exposures represent a dose to the individual.

There is no evidence to indicate the dose is not real.
