PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION April 6, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-76 V

This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Alabama Power Company Farley Unit 1 Docket No. 50-348 Houston County, Alabama

Subject:

IMJURY TO WORKMAN IN CONTAINMENT BUILDING About mid-day on April 6 a pipe engineer working in Unit 1 containment fell from the 155 foot level to the 117 foot level.

Unit 1 has been in cold shutdown for refueling for about 30 days.

The extent of injury is unknown. The man was conscious but unable to get on a stretcher.

He was contaminated to about 400 cpm above background.

He was being trans-ferred to a hospital when the plant was notified at 12:53 p.m. that the ambulance had been involved in an accident.

Seven individuals were injured in the accident.

There has been media interest as a result of the accident.

The licensee has not issued a press release.

NRC does not plan a press release. The State of Alabama has been informed.

Region II ( Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from inspector on site at 2:10 p.m. on April 6.
