PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION.
March 20, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-56 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
Facility: Omaha Public Power District Fort Calhoun (DN 50-285)

TRANSPORTATION INCIDENT At about ':00 a.m. on March 20,197], a Tri-State truck carrying radwaste from Fort Calhoun to Barnwell, S.C., collided with another truck on I-70, about 60 miles west of St. Louis.
The shipment, consisting of fifty-seven (57) drums of solidified evaporator bottoms and compacted trash and one box of compacted trash, contains 560 millicuries of fission and activation products.
Radiation levels in and around the truck at departure did not exceed D0T limits.
The shipment was not damaged. All containers remained on the truck, which, at the time of notification, was off the highway and not interfering with traffic.
The Missouri Division of Radiological Health dispatched a person to the scene. A Region III (Chicago) inspector in St. Louis on another matter also was dispatched to the scene.
DOT Region VII (Kansas City) was notified.
No press release has been made.
Media interest is expected.
Region III was notified of this incident by telephone by the Missouri Division of Radiological Health at 8:30 a.m. on March 20, 1979.
