PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNG-79-33

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluaif on and is basi,cally all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:
REPORT OF PLANE CRASH INVOLVING RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL A twin-engine beechcraft crashed at the Weir Cook Airport in Indianapolis, Indiana at 6:17 a.m. (CST) on February 27, 1979.
The aircraft carried two packages of radioactive material destined for Nuclear Pharmacy in Louisville, Kentucky.
The package contained 21 millicuries of gallium-67 and 200 millicuries of xenon-133.
The Indiana Board of Health responded to the incident and found the packages wet but intact; their radiation surveys at approximately 8:00 a.m. (CST) revealed no contamination.
The packages were forwarded to their destination.
Region III will make no press release but will respond to media or public questions on this matter.
NRC, Region III (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Indiana Board of Health at 8:30 a.m. on February 27, 1979.
DOE (Chicago Operations Office) also notified the NRC of this occurrence at approximately the same time.
Region III plans no further action.
