Facility: Babcock and Wilcox Company Copley, Ohio License No. 34-02160-04

Subject:

APPARENT OVEREXPOSURE TO THREE RADI0GRAPHERS AT THE MIDLAND NUCLEAR PLANT SITE Three radiographers received an apparent overexposure at about 2:00 a.m.,

on April 3, 1979, while performing radiographic exposures at the Midland Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 2, site. The licensee, Babcock and Wilcox, calculated the exposure to each individual to be 14 rems.

The radio-graphers' 200 mrem pocket dosimeters were off scale. The film badges have been sent to the vendor by air express for evaluation.

The cause of the overexposure was the apparent failure to fully retract the 75 curie Ir-192 source and to perform a survey to verify that the source had been retracted.

It was alleged that no survey meter was used and a

" beeper" worn by one of the radiographers did not function because of der.d batteries.

Consumers Power Company is considering a press release.

Region III does not plan to issue a press release but will respond to media or public questions on this matter.

The State of Michigan has been notified.

Initial notification was made to the NRC Resident inspector who notifieo Region III (Chicago) by telephone at 8:50 a.m., on April 3, 1979.

The Resident Inspector is at the site and an investigation into this matter by Region III specialists is planned.
