E6 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION January 29, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-15 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

FACILITY:

Home Transpcrtation Company Marietta, Georgia SUBJECT TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT INVOLVING LOW LEVEL WASTE On January 28 at about 9:00 p.m., a Home Transportation truck carrying 46 drums of low level radioactive waste was involved in an accident with another vehicle on Interstate-24 near Monteagle, Tennessee.

The truen overturned and the drums were scattered alongside the highway.

There is no indication that any of the drums broke open. According to surveys by the State of Tennessee, no radioactive material was released at the scene of the accident.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate-24 were blocked by the State Highway Patrol and remain blocked to permit reloading the drums on another Home Transportation truck.

IE. inspectors have been dispatched to the scene of the accident.

There has been media interest in this event.

A news release is not planned by the State of Tennessee or the NRC; however, both are responding to public i nqui ries.

Personnel from the Tennessee Department of Radiological Health are at the scene of the accident and plan to monitor the reloading operation.

The eastbound lanes of Interstate-24 will probably be closed until 4:00 p.m., January 29.

Region II (Atlanta) received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Office of Public Affairs NRC Headquarters, at 11:45 p.m.

on January 28.
