PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-14 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.
FACILITY: Tennessee Valley Authority Browns Ferry, Units 1, 2 and 3 Docket Nos. 50-259, 50-260, 50-296 Athens, Alabama
SUBJECT:
POTFNTIAL FLOODING 0F CRITICAL EQUIPMENT The failure of two ground water dewatering pumps has resulted in water accumulation in the Unit I reactor building.
The two dewatering pumps normally control the ground water table.
The water level has stabilized in Unit 1 basement at a level of six inches.
Critical equipment could have been affected if the water ievel reached a depth of two feet.
Two replacement pumps have been air lifted to the site and are expected to be operable early this evening.
Our Resident Inspector confirms that the water level has stabilized and that there is no immediate problem and corrective steps are being implemented.
All three Units are operating.
Units 2 and 3 are not affected by the water inleakage.
No unplanned radioactive releases have occurred.
Media interest may be expected.
The licensee is considering a news release.
NRC does not plan to issue a news release.
The State of Alabama 'nas been informed.
Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telecon from the resident inspector at 12:30 p.m. on January 26, 1979.
