Subject:

REACTOR WATER CLEANUP SYSTEM EIGHT INCH RETURN LINE THRU

WALL CRACK With the unit shutdown to repair a containment isolation valve, a through wall crack was discovered in the Reactor Water Cleanup System eight (8) inch diameter return line (type 304 SS, schedule 80) on January 6.

The location of the crack was in the heat affected zone of a pipe weld between the inside and outside containment isolation valves.

Radiographic Testing indicated the crack was approximately 5" in length on the pipe inside diameter and approximately 0.75" in length on the pipe outside diameter.

The licensee is also ultrasonic testing all other joints in the clean up system.

Plant restart is expected on January 9, following repairs.

Media interest is expected because of public interest in pipe cracks at nuclear power plants.

The State of Connecticut has been informed.

The media has been contacted and a press release was issued by the licensee.

NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from an inspector onsite, at 2:30 p.m. on January 6.
