PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-405 h
This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.
FACILITY: Texas A&M liniversity Triga Pool Reactor 50-128
SUBJECT:
S0IL CONTAMINATION Contaminated soil was found both inside and outside of the Texas A&M University Triga Pool Reactor control fence during a routine environmental survey conducted by the Texas Health Department and the licensee on June 26, 1979.
The maximum surface radiation levels found were 5 milliroentgens per hour and the maximum soil contamination levels were 0.013 microcuries per grn.
Radioactive material appears to be mainly Europium 152.
The licensee reported that the contamination appears to be the result of a liquid spill associated with an old experiment, 10-15 years ago.
The licensee is in the process of removing the contaminated soil for shipment to a burial site.

There has been no known media interest to date.
No press release is planned.
Region IV (Arlington) received notification of the contamination by telephone from the licensee's Health Physicist on September 5, 1979.
