SUBJECT:
RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE SHIPMENTS The August 22, 1979 " State" newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, published an article stating that local officials of both Surry and Yadkin counties are considering the adoption of local ordinances to limit the shipment of radio-active waste throuoh their c6 unties.
This action is similar to that taken by Garcen City, Geors a on August 20, 1979 (PNC-79-92).
The Yadkin county cornissioners are to decide September z, 1979 on the issue.
Surry County is proposing public hearings prior tc making ti decision.
Recion II contactec the State of North Carolina but they were unable to add tc the information contained in the newspaper report.
Region II (Atianta) developed this information in revievling normally received r.e a spapers.
Local media interest has developed.
No press release is planned by the NRC at this time.
