PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-407 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that'is known by IE staff on this date.

STORAGE OF LOW LEVEL RADWASTE A representative from Senator B. Bayh's office contacted Region III to request that we contact a named individual on the staff of the Purdue University School newspaper regarding a potential problem related to how the University stores their radioactive waste.

He expressed particular concern about the potential fire hazard from the. storage of fifty-five (55) gallon drums of toluene scintillation liquids.

Region III plans to perform a special inspection of this matter during the week of September 9,1979.

There has been no media interest.

No press release is planned.

NRC's Office of Congressional Affairs, the EPA and the State of Indiana have been informed.

NRC, Region III (Chicago), was informed of this matter on September 7, 1979, at 3:30 p.m.
