PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION August 27, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-368 This oreliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE saf ety or public interest sionificance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

FACILITY:

SUBJECT:

POSSIBLE HAND OVEREXPOSURE Ine licensee reported that two technicians performing in-vitro research with 5.illicuries of phosphorous-33 later learned that tne material was anosoborous-32.

The error was due to mislabeling by a New England radio-Charmaceutical manufacturer-The licensee ordered P-33 and all documents indicated that phosphorous-33_had been shipped.

The vendor has acknowledged the e rcr-tc the licensee.

The bremstrahlung dose rate from P-32 in glass is about s '. x times more en9rgetic than that f rom P-33.

Technicians handling the con-tainers may have received from 10 to 80 rems to their fingertips depending upon

ne outcome of re-enactments.

No whole body overexposures are suspected.

-egion II is reviewing the licensee's dose estimates for the hand ex;osures.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from
