PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-4I4 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest sionificance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT.

VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVOLVING RADIOACTIVE MEDICAL ISOTOPES IN HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA On September 10 at 3:49 p.m., a four-car accident occurred on I-95, Hollywood, Florida, involving a privately owned vehicle transporting two vials of Galium 67.

The operator of the vehicle,. an employee of Phumacon Nuclear, Inc.

Miami, Florida, informed responding medical rescue units of the meterial be.ag trans-ported.

Surveys were conducted with radiation detection equipment at the accident scene.

It was determined that no breakage or leakage had occurred.

The vials were transported to the original destination, Hollywood Memorial Hospital, by the rescue units.

Local media interest has been ext.!nsive and a press release was made by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The State of Florida has been informed.

The NRC does not plan a press release at this time.

The IAT was notified.

Region II (A.'.lanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Hollywood, Florida Fire Department at 5:42 p.m. on September 10, 1979.
