PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-79-415A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date

SUBJECT:

HURRICANE FREDERIC This supplements PNO-79-415 issued on September 11, 1979.

The Region II office in Atlanta is continuing the hurricane watch for Hurricane Frederic.

Frederic is classified by the National Hurricane Center as a Stafford/

Simpson scale Category 3 (maximum 5, minimum 1).

Maximum sustained winds are currently about 130 mph.

Central pressure is 947 millibars.

The 2:00 p.m.

position of Frederic was approximately 220 miles southeast of New Orleans and 150 miles south of Pensacola at 28.2N, 87.3W.

Forward speed is 12/15 mph, with landfall projected to be between Gulfport, Mississippi, and Pensacola, Florida, at midnight tonight.

Farley is approximately 175 miles east of the projected landfall point.

Region II is in communication with the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration area office in Atlanta, Georgia and is receiving weather advisories directly.

Region II has contacted the Mississippi Power and Light's Grand Gulf facility (under construction), and Alabama Power Company's Farley facility.

Region II is monitoring Farley's hurricane alert procedures; however, Unit I has been in cold shutdown since April and Unit 2 is under construction.

Farley reported that their emergency power supplies are operable.

Region II has verified operability of the hotline system from Region II to Farley and has made arrange-ments for alternate telephone / microwave communications to this site.
