September 11, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-416 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.
The informaf;on presented is as initially received without verification or evaluatiori and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

INADVERTENT RELEASE OF ACID AND CAUSTIC TO THE CHESAPEAKE BAY The licensee informed Region I that during the regeneration of a make-up deminer-alizer at 0430 hours0.00498 days <br />0.119 hours <br />7.109788e-4 weeks <br />1.63615e-4 months <br /> on September 11, 1979, an operator discovered that the drain valves on the neutralizer tank had been left open.
This rasulted in the discharge of about 74 gallons of concentrated acid and 144 gallons of concentrated caustic in about 14,000 gallons of effluent from the tank..This discharge was further diluted by the circulation cooling water discharge before mixing in the Chesapeake Bay.
No apparent signs of environmental stress were reported to be observed.
Media interest is expected because of the sensitivity to nuclear power plant matters.
The State of Maryland has been informed.
A press release is not planned by the licensee or NRC.
