The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

ACID RELEASE TO RECREATIONAL LAKE A leak in the sulphuric aci'd injection system, used to adjust pH in the circulating water system, resulted in a loss of sulphuric acid to the circulating water pump sump.

The leak was initially identified early September 1, 1979, isolated by 7:35 a.m. and repaired by 10:00 a.m.

The leak may have existed for up to 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> and the acid loss may have been as much as 3000 gallons of concentrated sulfuric acid.

The contents of the circulating water sump are transferred by level controlled sump pump to the oily water separator which drains to an isolated section of the recreational lake.

The lake drains by way of the reflection pond, a swamp, and marsh to the Columbia River.

Four-hundred to five-hundred small fish, mostly carp (two wash tubs full), were killed in the lake.

The occurrence has been reported to the State of Oregon.

The occurrence is not reportable to NRC under the Techniccl Specifications.

Neither the NRC nor the licensee have issued a press release concerning this occurrence.

Region V (San Francisco) was informed of this occurrence at 4:30 p.m. on September 1, 1979.
