PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-420 h This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT At about 10 a.m. on September 12, 1979, a truck carrying 4 cylinders of low enriched UF was involved in an accident approximately 100 miles east of Pittsburgh.6 Initial radio reports indicate that because of the possibility of leakage the police had closed the accident site (Route 30 near Bedford) to t'raffic.

The shipment originated at Goodyear Atomic Corporation and is carried by Tri-State Trucking.

It was destined for export to Japan (Mitsubishi International Corpor-ation), via Philadelphia.

An eoergency team with survey instruments was dispatched from Region I at 11:35 a.m. ~Information provided by Region I inspectors at the accident site at 2:30 p.m., September 12, 1979 is as follows:

There was no detectable radioactive material leakage or contamination.

All UF6 packages appeared to be in proper condition.

The tractor driver who recieved minor cuts and bruises was treated at a local hospital and released.

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and DDT representatives were at the accident site.

00T is investigating the cause of the accident.

Another tractor and trailer is being sent to the area by Tri-State Trucking.

Route 30 was reopened at about 2:30 p.m. today.

News media carried the story on the local stations.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, DOT, EPA, DOE and Goodyear Atomic Corporation have been informed.

NRC, Region I (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence by a report on a local radio station at 11:10 a.m. on September 12, 1979.
