45 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION May 25, 1979 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE--PNO-79-126 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of event of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance.

The information Presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that'is known by IE staff on this date.

Subject:

VEHICLE ACCIDENT NEAR CADILLAC, MICHIGAN Region III (Chicago) lescued from the news media of a vehicular accident which occurred Thursday evening, May 24th, at 6:45 p.m.,

near the intersection of Michigan State Highways M55 and M37.

Two vehicles were involved - a Birdwell well logging vehicle transporting a plutonium-238/ beryllium source (approxi-mately four curies) and a passenger car carrying three or more passengers.

Three people in the passenger car were killed.

There was very little damage to the well logging vehicle, a 2 1/2 ton truck.

After the accident, the truck was driven to Mount Pleasant. A Birdwell engineer at the accident site verified that there was no damage to the plutonium / beryllium source or its container.

There was media interest because of the fatalities. The State of Michigan was contacted by Region III on May 25, 1979, to gather additional information regarding this incident.

No press release is planned by Region III.

NRC, Region III (Chicago) received notification of this occurrence by the media by telephone on May 25, 1979 at approximately 10:45 a.m.
